Questions and Answers

Kairy, which, if any, of these traditional pieces had the most positive or meaningful impact on you?

They all have impacted me, but I would have to say that my favorite is “The Camel” because the piano transcription was written by my piano teacher, M. Bushtin. It includes so many technical challenges and was so much fun to work on with the composer coaching me.

Gulimina, you mentioned you were among the first major Uyghur pianists/musicians. Since you have been working professionally, have others from your region also pursued higher education in music, or does it continue to be less common?

In 2010 when I obtained my DMA in Piano Performance, the Chinese media in Xinjiang made a news report of me being the first Uyghur from China to receive a DMA in Piano Performance from the US. There are now many musicians from Xinjiang who studied professionally overseas or in domestic China. Music/piano education is blooming in China and in Xinjiang where I came from.
Yoshiko, it seems that your repertoire selections are very heart-centered and perhaps require lots of emotion and/or thoughtful interpretation. What are some pedagogical strategies you use to help students engage with these pieces?

For any piece, my recommendation would be to really try to get, “What is the story?” What are you trying to express? If the title of the piece is abstract, can you relate it to your own experiences? Those are starting points that I would use to really try to understand the pieces even deeper.

International Webinar (English, Spanish, and Portuguese): Preparing for Sonatinas

with Marvin Blickenstaff

English: Sonatinas lie at the heart of the intermediate and advancing repertoire we teach. For most students, sonatinas are the gateway to classical style. We assign a sonatina and work diligently to achieve accuracy of notes, rhythms, and fingerings. But for many students, the results are perfunctory and unconvincing. What is missing? One could generalize and suggest that the student is not adequately prepared technically and stylistically. This webinar focuses primarily on the steps which prepare students for convincing sonatina playing. This event will be in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
