How can every student be inspired to find musical joy at the piano?

Marvin Blickenstaff’s enthusiasm for piano teaching and performance throughout his lifetime of service to the piano teaching profession continues to inspire piano teachers worldwide. In 2024, The Frances Clark Center published his book Inspired Piano Teaching, his call to action for pianists and piano teachers to rekindle their passion for musical expression and excellence. Containing the philosophy of his life’s work, it reminds all piano teachers that our work matters and creates a powerful ripple effect that permeates communities and has the power to affect profound change.

How does one teach an “inspired” piano lesson?

Marvin’s book gets to the heart of piano teaching quickly, beginning with a chapter titled “Why We Teach.” Sharing the story of how he fell in love with music and the piano, Marvin reminisces about his early lessons and how one teacher completely altered the course of his life, and he describes the power of a motivational quote he once came across: “I touch the future—I teach.” These experiences form the philosophy behind his entire musical and technical approach at the piano, inspiring generations of pianists and teachers to recommit to the transformative power of music.

Helping Students Discover Artistry

Marvin’s teaching is known not only for its accessibility and attention to detail, but for the ways in which he empowered students to communicate with full expression at the piano. In chapter 5, Marvin shares his framework for a well-rounded lesson—TERRAC—which stands for technique, expression, reading, rhythm, aural skills (ear training), and creativity. Marvin believed that every lesson necessitated an opportunity for a student to demonstrate their ability to make beautiful music and at the same time, commit to the highest levels of creativity, rhythmic playing, and technical solidity. At the center of his approach was the idea that every musical line needed shape, flow, and a point of focus.

Advice for Difficult Teaching Moments

Do you ever experience moments of challenge in your teaching? Perhaps a lesson that leaves you feeling disappointed, or perhaps an interaction with a student that didn’t go quite according to plan. In one of the final chapters, “What Do You Do When the Magic Stops?”, Marvin asks powerful questions about the role of the teacher, the role of the student, and the role of the guardian. He also asks teachers to reflect on the content of their lessons and whether the lessons are truly focused on music-making and celebrating the joy of life through musical expression.
