Music from Western Europe inspired composers from Latin America to create compositions blended with their cultural roots, creating entirely new genres of music. Our teaching and performance literature is constantly evolving, bringing together various cultural roots and styles to expand our understanding of others’ religion, history, and nationalism. Latin American music portrays rich cultures and many composers were highly influenced by them. Learning about Latin American classical music breaks the barrier that classical music only or even primarily derives from Western Europe. Standard repertoire blends Western classical instruments within the music, but with the course, you will learn to hear sounds from instruments of different cultures; including those that you may have never heard before!

Who Would Find This Course Valuable?
This course is highly recommended for teachers who are eager to share Latin American music with their students, expanding their repertoire and understanding of how music influences others around the world. Teachers will gain pedagogical ideas and tools on how to approach Latin American repertoire with their students. Pianists and piano teachers should consider taking this course to expand their repertoire list and historic, cultural knowledge of music. Since music is a diverse field, we can learn a lot about human experiences and different traditions that shaped who we are today.
